Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. My self and I; the intimate and completely frank record of one woman''s courageous experiment with psychiatry''s newest drug LSD-25 by Constance A Newland (pseudonym for Thelma Ross) 1st ed./3rd printing 1962 HC/DJ experiments with LSD published by Coward Mccann; Kirkus review from the time "The psychic syndrome of Constance Newland -- a young widow, mother, and highly successful slick writer -- was not particularly extraordinary. She had always been sexually frigid but then, Kinsey considered, so are one-third of American married women. She was an insomniac, suffered an irksome tic intermittently, and getting her to the dentist was like pulling teeth. Miss Newland had once before undergone psychoanalysis. The sessions hadn't helped much. Out of sheer curiosity, she volunteered for an experimental psychotherapy -- a psychotherapy which was to use, as "a direct route to the subconscious", the controversial hallucinogen LSD-25. The drug induces a kind of wakeful dream-state so that the patient may experience hallucinatory phenomena while his five senses are functioning actively. My Self and I is a subjective case study of these sessions which lasted for five months and which cured Constance Newland of all her neurotic symptoms. In the five hour periods of analysis, the author, with the help of her doctor and LSD, evoked dreams of Rodin's L'Emprise and Botticelli's Birth of Venus. She traveled through the caverns of Hades, recalled the words of the Marquis de Sade, relived the reality and psychic reality of her early childhood. The author does the deceptive creativity of her surrealistic psyche more than justice by this study. But something more important than a scarred libido is brought to this work. Miss Newland has seen the absurdity of Freudian paradox. Although a convert to the doctrine, she has not forgotten her own reluctance to accept many rather frightful truths and it is this awareness of antithesis that makes the book so thoroughly convincing. An enlightened, well-documented, enormously human account, the quality of the writing and of the woman augurs success." some jacket wear and tear, writing on back inner cover, otherwise clean and tight.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. "The intimate and completely frank record of one woman's courageous experiment with psychiatry's newest drug LSD-25." This bestseller from 1962 was heralded as the first case study by a patient treated by a psychiatrist with LSD. The author, using a pseudonym, is actually Thelma Moss, an actress and scriptwriter who later became involved in parapsychology and Kirlian photography. She also suffered from suicidal psychological issues which led her to be treated with LSD. This is a very good copy indeed of the first printing. There's a small label on front endpaper, a hint of browning to edges, and just a little softening to the extremities. Dust jacket is very good, edgeworn and slightly browned. JS.

She had a traumatic time when her husband died suddenly shortly after their daughter was born. There after she had another relationship but this failed and she found herself functioning but putting many difficult thoughts deep into her subconscious. She had already had psychoanalysis and felt somewhat at peace with herself but when the opportunity came to volunteer for an experiment in LSD therapy she took it. She describes the 'journeys' she took , some in great detail, and then concludes how she felt afterwards. So, basically this is a 'description of an adventure in the unconscious human mind, as revealed through a chemical agency.'.
